Pete's Drive-In, Roseburg, Ore.

You can't see a drive-in movie in Douglas County anymore. Hot rods run Roseburg's "gut" on only one predetermined day a year. But standing up to the test of time, Pete's Drive-In still offers car-hop service and decent hamburgers.

Pete's sign is unmistakable on Harvard Avenue with his chef's hat and portruding belly, but actually, the Big Top Burger is no gut bomb. Even better than the Pete sign is the one advertising Ho-Made Fries (snigger), served with goop. The joint proudly offers Umpqua Dairy products, churned less than a mile away in the Mill-Pine District.

The Big Top was OK, but at $5 we weren't complaining. Ask for a medium drink or larger, as the 12oz Coke left us thirsty.

The best part about Pete's was the service, even rarer than drive-ins these days in Douglas County. Our waitress was prompt and attentive, even with a crowd.

Feeling brave? Try Pete's fried oysters.
